- GIVEAWAY -

Australian photographer Ward Roberts was kind enough to send us a couple copies of his new photo book, Courts. Its a beautiful debut book for Ward, the culmination of a four-year project documenting sporting courts across the globe.

This book, available at ERM Books, is loaded with beautiful color drenched images.

Alright who wants them?  To win a copy of this book just leave a comment below for Ward. Check out his site, let him know what you like about his work. He is an awesome photographer, I love his color pallets and the simplicity. If you go follow our Twitter page and tweet this giveaway, I will count those as two additional entries. Just be sure to tag @globalyodel in the tweet so I know. I will choose two winners on Friday September 28th.

Whether set against a backdrop of Hong Kong’s pastel high-rises and smog-filtered light, London’s manicured garden beds and quaint architectural details, or the concrete and brick palette of Melbourne and New York, Roberts’ photographs prove striking for their linear properties and architectural contexts.

I killed my twitter but I’m in love with Courts.
    Does that count too?

  1. Thanks for the enthusiasm Aleksandra. Ward’s book is amazing! We will count that as an additional entry for you!

  2. I want it,I need it! :) I love Ward Roberts because of the colours and compositions :) If I win this book I will give it for bday present to my boyfriend,he is a great basketball player :) xxx

  3. I’ve played Basketball since high-school and I used to carry around my ball and shoes all the time, sometimes while I was on the bus I could see a court and invite friends to play there the next day, that’s how we got to know most courts on our city, we knew the ones with lower baskets so we could dunk, we knew the ones where wind played in your favor if you knew the time of day and the side of the court you should be playing.

We even knew which backboards were hollow so the ball would bounce weird off of them, those were not our favorites because the local kids knew that and they beat us. All in all I loved playing basketball everyday of the week, I sure miss those days.

I really appreciate the noiseless/transfixed sense that you get from most of your photographs, Ward. It’s a different kind of beauty that some people never get to really treasure due to today’s fast-paced society. Keep doing what you love to do!

I love the used of pastels and muted colors in his work. 48 hours is very strange and ethereal as well.

  4. Ward – this is a fantastic series and so glad I found your work. While viewing I kept imagining each image as an individual patch of an enormous quilt of color & geometry! Interesting how the buildings seem to stand watch over these spaces, too. I enjoyed viewing the spaces free of distraction from their associated sports. We miss the beauty of the spaces as spectators sometimes. Thanks for noticing for us and sharing!

When I played basketball I wasn’t very good, but I loved a good team atmosphere and hanging with my friends. The thing I enjoyed the most was the style of the basketball court, I remember once we played under a hilly range outside of my town and I just wanted to stay there and look at the court. This book strangely relates to me, how odd that someone would share the same passion as me!

p.s. I really enjoy the pastal colours in the courts!

to be honest ? I never heard of you before… but… I saw 3 pictures of your book and it was so… wow
the fact that all the colors are absolutly reduced makes me dream about the place their were taken. What people live there ? What are they doing/working/etc. ? The fact that the colors are more or less “removed” makes me reduce the theme to patterns… I guess it’s a very inspiring act to see your surrounding like this.

These are lovely photos. Really dig the palette and the sense of possibility inherent in these empty courts.

Anticipation. All the photographs feel like they were taken just before the public were allowed to invade the scene.
Plus if it helps my case ‘because I eat cornflakes’.
