Hanging On by Aleksander Kelpman in Tallinn, Estonia

  • Tallinn Estonia by Aleksander Kelpman for Global Yodel

I chose this photo because it’s symbolic to me. It symbolizes the current political stance of Tallinn and Estonia, as well as the suggestible nature of the Estonian people. Everything is made to appear beautiful and the tree is full of life. But what you don’t know is that the tree is actually very close to being pulled off the ground and off a 20 meter drop down the cliff.

Name: Aleksander Kelpman

Place you live: Tallinn, Estonia

Place your photo was taken: I took it at the coast of Paldiski (40min drive).

Can you sum up Tallinn? The safest capital in the world, in a way. It’s hard to become overwhelmed.

Occupation: Photographer

Preoccupation: The vast world of electronic music.

A perfect day in Tallinn? Start off by eating breakfast at F-Building or Boheem in Kalamaja, you may want to visit the national art museum “KUMU” or any art galleries in the Old Town, then grab a few beers and lay down at the Patarei “industrial beach area,” at night there may be something happening at the old Patarei prison culture palace, use the music to find your way.

If someone was visiting, what must they do? Visit in the summer.

A little known fact about Tallinn? During the Soviet era, Tallinn was the only city in the USSR where the residents could pick up Western television frequencies. The signal came over the sea from Helsinki, Finland.

Who is your favorite photographer? I’ve always admired Masao Yamamoto.
