A photo book Giveaway

Global Yodel contributorWilma Hurskainen, from Helsinki Finland, was kind enough to send in a couple copies of her photo book, Heiress. – Thanks Wilma! – Wilma Studied photography at Lahti Institute of Design and Aalto University in Helsinki. She works both as a freelance photographer for commissioned assignments and as an independent artist. I love her work and think she is creating some very unique stuff.

There is an essay by Ann-Christin Bertrand in the book. And here is what has been said about this book. “Like poems, Wilma Hurskainen’s photographs perceptively link poetry with humour and open up spaces of associations to own experiences of the spectator. In her No Name series, Hurskainen, who has strong connections with the Helsinki School, explores the themes of childhood and memory. Childhood and adulthood are present, like layers, in the same photograph. By loosely attaching texts to the images, Hurskainen recreates memories (including those that are false and invented) and continues their visual representation. Her main objective is to find out and question how a text and a photograph mediate a story.”

Alright who wants copy of this awesome book?  To win just leave a comment below this post for Wilma. Check out her site and let us know what you like about her work. Personally, I am in love with her ‘chameleon’ photos, where the subjects clothing and the landscape blend into one. If you head over to our Twitter feed, follow us, and tweet about this giveaway, I will count that as two additional entries. Just be sure to tag @globalyodel so I know. I will choose two winners on Friday, November 16th.

The chameleon photos are great. The amount of prep, pre work, proof shots and general thought that must have gone into these is incredible. Really very nice. The giant cat head is… out there ^.^

Loved the chameleon photos. I’ve seen more extravagent versions of chameleon photos, but these are much more stunning in their simplicity.

I especially love the Woman Who Married A Horse! What beautiful landscapes and still surprising set-ups… And, of course, I looked through all of the sisters’ portraits :) Lovely!

  1. Again thank you GY for exposing us all to such wonderful imagery! In Wilma’s work I see Arno Rafael Minkkinen’s commitment to the extreme struggle and effort in capturing the self portrait. And what a gift to be able to photograph the continuity between past and present in the Growth series. A commitment that exudes patience in documenting the sameness and difference in the days between captures!

  2. THESE ARE DOPE! I WANT ONE!

I love imaginative photography where the story or narrative is not always obvious, inviting you to look deeper.

Art that truly defies definition. And art that doesn’t merely reproduce but honors the soul.
    Inspired.

wilma’s work particularly moves me as a woman photographer who is always trying to hold on to memory, poetry and words. i am always searching for ways to implant my memory and explore the relationship between words and images in my own project calling HERE’S TO LONGING. wilma’s work helps to inspire my work as a photographer, and challenge what i know to be true in our mind’s memory and our collective heart. i would die to have this book.

I did like most the growth-pictures on the website. I have 4 children, and in front of my inner eye their growth re-appeared.

I like the natural-analog style of the images, that let the great ideas truly stand out. They never look over-styled or polished too much. I am also a huge fan of the idea of blending people with the landscape. It let’s me think about if we are still part of nature.

The quality of her pictures pushes us to an imaginary field of perception. Her photos evoke the idea of the imaginary, yet conjour ideas and thoughts that have completely slipped through the conscious. As a native Finn myself coming, I see the influence of her home land in her work. The stark simplicity and soft loneliness of many of the photos create feelings of the quiet of the homeland and the appreciation for nature and surroundings. Her work is a beautiful line along the border of the known and the imagined. Thank you for sharing this with us.
