Histories They Overtake by Aaron Moran in Langley, British Columbia, Canada

As someone who grew up in Langley and still visits it often, I can’t help but see the negative side to the development of the area. Homes, as well as forests and natural land are upturned for town-homes and strip malls with little regard for the histories they overtake.

Name:Aaron Moran

Place you live: Langley, British Columbia, Canada

Place your photo/video was taken: Langley, BC (Willoughby)

Can you sum up Langley? Langley is a suburb one hour East of Vancouver that has undergone massive development in the last five years. Single home communities built in the 70’s are being replace by multiple occupancy condos and town-home structures.

Occupation: Print media & sculpture technician at the University of the Fraser Valley, Abbotsford, BC

A perfect day in Langley? Wandering the trails in Campbell Valley Regional Park, followed by chai latte’s at McBurney’s in downtown Langley, record shopping at Krazy Bob’s (the BEST record store I’ve ever been to), and beers at the Fort Pub in Fort Langley.

If someone was visiting, what must they do? Antiquing in nearby Fort Langley or digging for records at Krazy’s Bob’s Music Emporium in Downtown Langley.

A perfect meal in Langley? Sushi at this tiny Japanese restaurant called ‘Akane’ in Walnut Grove.

What is the best thing about your spot? It is located on the cusp of urban and rural, and also borders several forests, mountains, lakes and rivers. Because of this, it provides the best of both worlds.

What is the worst? As aforementioned, the over-development of the area with no emphasis on style, creativity, or originality.

A little known fact about where you live? Langley was established in 1827 by the Hudson’s Bay Company.

Where is your favorite place in the world? After all is said and done, it’s here.
