Deep Snow by Michael Overbeck in Whistler, British Columbia

Michael Overbeck got the photography bug after graduating from high school and has been pursuing his passion ever since.  The snowy mountains of Whistler, BC, sets the stage for energizing images of skiiers, trail runners, hockey players, and yes, even swimmers!  Check out his vibrant photos and be sure to follow him on Instagram here: @michaeloverbeck

Name:Michael Overbeck

Place you live:  Whistler, BC

Occupation:  Adventure & Travel Photographer

Preoccupation: I’m grateful in that I began my photography career within a year or so of finishing high school. The transition from high school graduate to full-time adventure photographer was short, but it held a few odd jobs. I worked in an open-pit mine in Northern Alberta, spent a few years as a Sales Associate at Helly Hansen while in high school, and bagged groceries at a local grocery store.

Place your Instagrams were taken?  Whistler, British Columbia

Can you sum up Whistler?  This town has always inspired me and after almost 20 years here, I’m not sure I could even sum it up in one paragraph.  This town has produced dozens of Olympic athletes, successful entrepreneurs, and some of the most well-versed photographers out there. These people are what inspire me.

What is a perfect day in Whistler?  Storm days with deep snow and high winds.  These are hands-down my favourite days.  Usually, the crowds have all stayed off the mountain, so you have it all to yourself (plus a few buddies).

If Whistler was a person or character who would it be?  Chuck Norris.

Do you shoot with your phone or other cameras or both?  I shoot with whatever camera I have but that usually ends up being my Sony A7rii or Sony A6500.  If I’m not carrying either of those, it ends up being my iPhone.

What is your editing process?  I always aim to keep it simple, usually a little tweak on the curves tool, plus a few adjustments on the saturation/hue tool in Lightroom.

Can you give a couple tips to aspiring Instagram photographers?  Shoot everyday. It will help define your style and progress your skills exponentially.

Who are your three favorite photographers?  Alex Strohl, Jordan Manley, and Garrett Grove. I’ve always admired their ability to tell stories through photographs and to adventure into remote regions around the world.

What is the most amazing travel experience you’ve ever had?  Right after high school, a few friends and I travelled to Hokkaido to go skiing for a month.  Ever since I was a kid I dreamed of going here, as it’s constantly referred to as the snowiest place on Earth.  It was an unforgettable experience that opened me up to the world.
