Surfing Long Island Sound by Sean W. Spellman in New London, Connecticut, USA

The Fisher’s Island ferry boat goes from New London, CT to Fisher’s Island, NY, just a few miles off the coast.  With the Atlantic Ocean at it’s southern reaches and the Long Island Sound to it’s north, it is ripe for early-morning fall journeys to the private side of the island.

It is rare to surf in the Long Island Sound, but sometimes its possible.  You’ve got to dodge lobster traps, and have a very thick wetsuit.

Can you sum up New London? That’s what I wanted—to be alone with myself in another world where truth is untrue and life can hide from itself. Out beyond the harbor, where the road runs along the beach, I even lost the feeling of being on land. The fog and the sea seemed part of each other. It was like walking on the bottom of the sea. As if I had drowned long ago. As if I was the ghost belonging to the fog, and the fog was the ghost of the sea. It felt damned peaceful to be nothing more than a ghost within a ghost.”  – Eugene O’Neill, Long Days Journey Into Night
