At 81 Leo Berchtold skied every day last season or close to it. With his trademark outfit he is easily spotted on the slopes. Back in the day they used to call him “Steel Pipe” for his high speed, non-stop, top to bottom approach.

Can you sum up you area in Alberta? Being in such a dramatic landscape there is a very strong connection to/ respect for the natural world among people. Not surprisingly, there is an outdoor culture here that goes way back.
Occupation: Arborist/ Photographer
Preoccupation: Cafe time.
If someone was visiting, what must they do? A couple of hours in town will suffice. Spend the rest of your time walking on a trail.
What and where is a perfect meal in the place you call home? Anything off the barbecue in the summer. Given the short season, it is special.
What is the best thing about your spot? Long summer days.
A little known fact about where you live? There is a rabbit epidemic that has polarized some segments of the community.
What is your favorite place in the world? I seem to be drawn to the edges of places. Fogo Island, Newfoundland is a recent discovery.
