Dirty Pretty in Tacoma, Washington, USA
The landscape with a pair of pants we found on the riverbank was made on the outskirts of Tacoma where people go shooting and fishing. This photograph sums up the atmosphere in this area… dirty/pretty.

Can you sum up Tacoma? For the past three years I’ve lived/worked between Washington state and Brooklyn. Tacoma, just 45 minutes south of Seattle is an industrial town which is like a diamond in the rough. I spent a lot of time roaming around the southern part of Tacoma photographing in salvage yards and abandoned spaces as well as spending time in the forest.

A perfect day in Tacoma? A perfect day in Tacoma would be breakfast at Denny’s (it’s a chain), then head near the water (there are many places to do this) and go for a long stroll with another person and a dog. You might get peckish and chilly so go get a yummy bowl of pho (Vietnamese noodle soup) at Pho King. After that, go to Sanford and Son antiques and also check out a very interesting place. When you’ve had enough, head over to get a drink and sing some Karaoke at Bob’s Java Jive (see below).
If someone was visiting, what must they do? Go to Bob’s Java Jive. It’s a bar that’s shaped like a teapot!!
A perfect meal in the place you call home? MSM Deli has amazing sandwiches! Mike’s deluxe is a must-have.
What is the best thing about your spot? It’s got the dirty pretty aesthetic and the Twin Peaks lighting which I am in love with.
What is the worst? It’s so far away from my other home – Brooklyn…oh, and the weather.
A little known fact about where you live? I think Tacoma is the little known fact compared to its neighboring Seattle.
Where is your favorite place in the world? It depends on my mood – I’ve been doing a residency at Wassaic Project in the Hamlet of Wassaic just about two hours North of NYC and I am in love with the area.
Who are your three favorite photographers? Katy Grannan, Alec Soth, Anna Gaskell
