How would you sum up Boulder Creek? The woods. I live in the woods.
What is a perfect day in Boulder Creek? The best days usually consist of the following things: Yoga under the trees. A jog through the canyon. A nap with the cats. Making art. Laying in sunshine with my dog, Mowgli. Having an unexpected encounter with wildlife. Drinking a happy hour beer at the brewery. Yard work. Going for a walk in a new place. Being simple.
If Boulder Creek was a person or character who would it be and why? I suppose it would be the Log Lady from Twin Peaks. There are so many odd characters in this town, she seems to sum it up quite nicely.
How long have you been using Instagram? A few months after it came out, if I remember correctly.
Do you shoot with your phone or other cameras or both? All my Instagram images are made with my phone camera.
What is your editing process? Lately I have been using Afterlight for basic editing.
Do you create images outside of Instagram? My art focus has revolved around photography for several years, and has always lived outside of Instagram. Most of that work can be viewed on my website.
Has Instagram/phoneography affected how you shoot? In some ways. I have always used various cameras to make images. Instagram provided a platform to share those photographs and enabled me to be a part of a new and different conversation. The images I shoot tend to act as a visual notebook, a place to observe thought patterns developed over time. These observations tend to inform how I approach making new work outside of Instagram.
Can you give a couple tips to aspiring Instagram photographers? Go for a walk. Start a new project. Do your best.
