We love Rosie Ubacher’s beautiful photos of Austria. Her moody style and use of soft colors makes the Salzkammergut region just outside Salzburg look like something from a dream. Follow her at @rosie_ubacher.

Place your Instagrams were taken? The Salzkammergut region in Austria.

Can you sum up the place you live? The Salzkammergut region is a gorgeous area of lakes and mountains just outside Salzburg in Austria. It’s where the Sound of Music was filmed (so think: picturesque alpine life!)

What is a perfect day in the Salzkammergut region? A perfect (summer) day would start bright and early with a hike up the mountain in front of my house, followed by lunch on the Alm on top. The afternoon would then be spent down the road at the small pebbled beach on Lake Mondsee swimming, drinking wine and watching the sunset with friends. I grew up in Canada but always spent a few months here every summer when I was a child and my fondest memories are of such perfect summer days (hiking in the morning and swimming all afternoon!).

If the Salzkammergut region was a person or character who would it be and why? I like to think my Uncle Schurli is the walking, talking, unofficial ambassador of the Salzkammergut. He’s a rambunctious legend who has lived through it all and knows every regional song and story. At 80 he can still out-drink (and out-sing) any 20-year-old.

How long have you been using Instagram?
I joined about two and a half years ago but only started really actively posting about a year ago.

Do you shoot with your phone or other cameras or both? I shoot day-to-day with my iPhone and use a DSLR for important stuff and jobs. I’ve also recently started using film cameras and the dark room.

What is your editing process? With a few exceptions all my Instagram editing is done on the phone. I use VSCOcam mostly, Skwrt for perspective corrections, and sometimes Snapseed for vignetting.

Do you create images outside of Instagram? While I find myself using my iPhone most of the time while traveling I will still use my DSLR when I’m venturing out specifically to take photos (and I feel up to lugging my camera around). I also work as a travel/lifestyle photographer, so my DSLR still gets a workout no matter what.

Has Instagram/phoneography affected how you shoot? Definitely.  I take more photos more often and I find it much more fun. I travel A LOT and it’s liberating to be able to take great pictures without having to lug around a heavy camera. It’s also great when traveling in countries where you wouldn’t want to take a fancy camera out on to the streets. Also, being able to share individual photos with so many people, so quickly, has made me more motivated to take those every day shots.

Can you give a couple tips to aspiring Instagram photographers? Put effort into developing a good editing process. Be active on Instagram – comment and like more than you post. Wait for it, or make it happen – not every photo is already there, and sometimes you have to wait a while for the perfect moment! And lastly – get out there and explore… there’s often a great photo just down that street you never take.

Who are your three favorite Instagrammers?

That’s a hard one. There are so many talented instagrammers and I never stop finding new ones to follow…..
Some of my many favourites include @careauxphotography, @salvalopez, @yosigo_yosigo, @suuto_neuta and @side_two.
