Strange Island in Staten Island, New York, USA
I moved from Brooklyn to Staten Island in December of 2012, and taking the ferry is one of my favorite parts of living here. It’s like no other commute, I love being on the water and the 25 minutes it takes is just enough to read a few chapters in a book or have a coffee. Except the ferry, Staten Island is not a place that people think about when they think about New York, but I get to see the Statue of Liberty and Downtown Manhattan on my commute, which is pretty wonderful.

Occupation: Photographer
Preoccupation: Photography and travel
A perfect day in Staten Island? Going for a bike-ride somewhere, have a coffee on the way and read a book/hang out with a friend, and finish the day with a dinner and a cocktail in a bar on the Lower East Side or in Brooklyn.
If someone was visiting, what must they do? Take the ferry to my island!
A perfect meal? Mussels at Five Leaves in Brooklyn.
What is the best thing about your spot? I love my apartment, it’s spacious, which is rare for New York, and I feel like it’s a little island on the island, secluded but yet close enough to do all the fun things in the city.
What is the worst? Missing the ferry home in the middle of the night is pretty boring.
A little known fact about where you live? Staten Island has the most parks of all the boroughs (at least that’s what a cabdriver told me the other day)
Where is your favorite place in the world? Wherever I call home for the moment.
Who are your three favorite photographers? Sally Mann, Robert Mapplethorpe and Riitta Päiväläinen
