Urban Gardening by Matthias Heiderich in Tempelhofer Freiheit, Germany

Allmende Kontor, an urban gardening project located inside Tempelhofer Freiheit, is one of the largest projects of this kind in Berlin. The photo was taken on a cold, foggy day in autumn.

Name:Matthias Heiderich

Place you live: Berlin Tempelhof, Germany

Place your photo was taken: Tempelhofer Freiheit, Germany

Can you sum up the place you live? Tempelhof is a district of Berlin situated in the south west. My home is very close to the former Tempelhof Airport, where the Berlin arilift was organized in 1948/49. The airport was closed a couple of years ago and the airfield is a park now. It’s huge and usually not too crowded. I go there to ride my bike and lay in the grass.

Preoccupation: Photographer

What is a perfect day in Berlin? All summer days in Berlin are perfect, you shouldn’t come to Berlin in Winter…

If someone was visiting, what must they do? I generally recommend to leave Berlin Mitte to see more of Berlin’s outskirts, if you want to get to know the real Berlin. Berlin is a very diverse city and full of contrasts. The Berlin most people know is only a very small part of central Berlin, it’s not representative.

A perfect meal in Berlin? If you like Italian food your perfect meal is at Monte Croce, an Italian restaurant situated in Kreuzberg 61. They make the best pasta in town.

What is the best thing about your spot? Berlin has good food, good concerts, nature is around the corner, and my favorite people live here, too.

What is the worst? It’s getting too crowded and expensive, too many people are moving to Berlin these days, it’s becoming so difficult to find a decent place to live. Also, poverty, drugs, and alcohol are becoming more and more serious problems in my opinion. Honorable mentions: the weather in winter, public transportation, a phenomenon called “Easy-Jet Ravers”.

A little known fact about where you live? I live in a part of Tempelhof called “Fliegerviertel”. It’s where the pilots used to live in the early days of the airport. It’s like a village within the city with pictoresque small houses and gardens, but still very close to Kreuzberg and Neukölln (the hip areas).

Where is your favorite place in the world? I must admit I enjoy my bed a lot, but that would be a lame answer, therefore I say: my balcony on a sunny day (still lame, I guess).

Who are your three favorite photographers? Christoph Morlinghaus, Josef Schulz, Cody Cobb (to name only 3)
