Place you live: San Francisco, California
Place your Instagrams were taken: In and around San Francisco.
Can you sum up San Francisco? Sometimes warm, sometimes cold, sometimes foggy, sometimes clear; often all on the same day, but always beautiful.
What is a perfect day in San Francisco? A sunny day, clear skies, and a warm night. We get about two of those a year so they’re pretty special when they occur.
If your city was a person or character who would it be and why? Rust Cohle from True Detective. Tough, smart and handsome; flashes of brilliance, but deeply troubled and with a substance abuse problem.
How long have you been using Instagram? Three years.
Do you shoot with your phone or other cameras or both? So far I’ve only shown photos on Instagram that I shot with my phone, however I do see the value in being able to share different types of work with that audience.
What is your editing process? A combination of Snapseed and VSCO Cam. I usually adjust contrast and sharpness, sometimes play with colors and tones.
Do you create images outside of Instagram? Yes, I work full time as an editorial/commercial photographer.
Has Instagram/phoneography affected how you shoot? Only in the sense that it encourages me not to overthink things. Shoot first, ask questions later. Most of the time I’m just reacting to light, color, and my surroundings.
Can you give a couple tips to aspiring Instagram photographers? Yeah, don’t aspire to be an ‘Instagram photographer’. Seriously though, shoot for yourself, try to disregard ‘likes’ and whatever’s popular. Experiment. Get out of your comfort zone. Document your life in a different way. Oh, and get closer to your subject!
Who are your three favorite Instagrammers? At the moment: Alexi Hobbs (@alexihobbs), Collin Hughes (@collinhughes), and Joe Earley (@joeearleyjournal)
